7 Steps to Getting a Work Success According to Your Goals


I often hear people say, “I want to succeed, but I don’t know where to start” or “I’ve found success in my career, yet I’m not happy.” Then I ask, “What does success in your career mean for you?” And many find it difficult to define what it really means to be successful in life.

It is common for people to lack clarity, focus, and direction, and when you put thoughts and actions that do not conform to your values, this can only add to your misguided quest to achieve career success.

A word of warning: It will take time to think and work on your way to success in the job. You need to set aside time and focus on the steps you are taking to achieve this. This guide can help you get started.

  1. Describe Your Success
    Pause. Give yourself time and space to think for yourself.

What does job success mean to you?

This is about expressing your vision of success. This should not depend on what you think you should “do”, what others want you to do, or the habits you see around you.

When you strip off all your external influences and control your inner critic, what are you left with? You need to define the type of success that best suits your situation. This TED Talk, featuring Alain de Botton, discusses how we can define success and simplify the process:


There is no scheduled response. Successful people are different. Your feedback will change and be affected by life events. Here are a few examples of work success:

Health work balance
Opportunities for growth and development
Feeling that donations have an impact
Now, even considering the above examples, the definitions are not clear enough. You should take it seriously:


What do you mean by occupational health balance?
What do you see as opportunities for growth and development?
How would you like to be known for your work? How do you know if your donations have had an impact?
Let us consider some possible answers to the above questions:

I want more time with my family and less stress at work.
I want more jobs, team management, higher income, and a reputation for working at a certain level in the company.
I would like my immediate leader to send me a thank-you note or give me a cup of coffee to express my sincere gratitude. I will be able to make an impact if I get feedback from my colleagues, leaders, and other stakeholders.
Other questions that you can consider to help reduce focus on the above answers include:


What are some ways in which you can use your time to spend with your family? And reduce your work pressure?
What is most important to you in the next 12 months?
What is the value of getting an answer from others?
Now, I only scratch with these examples. It takes time to do internal work and to build a solid foundation.

Start the task by first asking what it means to accomplish the task, and then ask yourself sensible questions to help you dig deeper.

What types of themes come from your answers? What keywords or phrases keep coming to you?

  1. Know Your Values
    Values ​​are principles and beliefs that guide your decisions, behavior, and actions. When you do not adhere to your values ​​and act in a way that conflicts with your beliefs, life will seem to be a struggle, and you may stop learning and growing.

There are simple value tests that can help you quickly determine your basic values ​​. Find any price list, and write down the top 5 that jump on you as the most important one.

Once you have your top 5 values, keep them visible. Here are some ways to make them stick:

Write them on identification cards or notes and send them to your office.
Take a picture of your prices and use it as a screen saver on your phone.
Put the words in your fridge.
Enter the words in your comment board.
Where will your value names be placed in your visible area so that you have a constant memory of them?

  1. Define Your Short-Term and Long-Term Goals
    When writing down your short-term and long-term goals, use the SMART framework: Clear, measurable, accessible, consistent, and timed. Take it as a mental exercise that will determine your success in the career. Your strengths and opportunities are endless.

How you define the short and the long is entirely up to you. The shortest time can be 30 days, 90 days, or six months. Perhaps the long-term goals are four months, one year, or ten years.


Here are a few meditation questions to help you write down your goals:

What would you like to do today if you had the power to make it the way you want it to be?
If there were no obstacles, what would you like to gain?
If you had the freedom to do whatever you wanted, what would it be?
What kind of impact do you want to have on people?
Who are your favorite people? What about them or what do you have that you want in your life or work?
What activities empower you? What is your favorite occupation?
Be very specific and specific about your goals for achieving career success. Think of an archer. This person is a laser focused target, the center of a bullseye. Target your goal.

By focusing on one goal at a time and making that goal visible, you can behave and act in ways that will help you solve problems and bring you closer to your career goals.

  1. Determine Your Higher Skills
    What did you like to do as a child? What makes these moments so exciting? What did you carry? What do you value most about these moments? What are the common themes?

Which job do you feel is the most difficult? What kind of work do you do that doesn’t seem like a lot of work? Think of a job that you can keep track of.

What are your desires? Give it a try. Temptation. Take the initiative and get started. How can you incorporate more of this type of activity into your daily life?

Succeeding at your job requires identifying your talents, especially the talents you want to use on a daily basis to do a job that sounds like purpose. Start paying attention to what you do best.

  1. Find “Hearing Words” Words You Want to Hear
    Do you have a tendency to use your head or your heart to make decisions?

I am more inclined to make sensible, practical, and truthful decisions using my head. It is very rare for me to make decisions based on my emotions. I was forced to learn how to make good decisions by listening to my gut when I was fighting important life decisions. This was unusual for me; however, it increased my self-esteem.

Review any list of sensory words [4]. Use the same process you use for exercise rates to reduce how you want to feel when talking about work success.

Keep these words visible, too!

Review your answers. What do you see? What insight do you gain from these answers and from the steps above?

  1. Be determined to stay happy
    To achieve the success of the job, you will need to make career decisions that are in line with your values, goals, skills, and emotions. This is not for the faint of heart. It takes real work, courage, and determination to cut the noise around you. You will need to stay a little more relaxed until you build your muscles to hit the goals you want.

  1. Cultivate Positive Feelings
    While many think that success in life is the key to happiness, others are more likely to be positive. One study found that “evidence continues to show that happiness is associated with and often precedes work success and that attempts to raise positive emotions lead to improved outcomes at work” .

What does this mean for your work?


Instead of trying to be happy only with your success, find other ways to cultivate positive emotions in your life, as this will help you to eventually achieve that success. Engage in leisure activities, try to meditate, or spend time with good friends and family.

Do what makes you feel good, and you will find the success of the job comes easily.

For many who have been through a change of occupation or have been affected by life events, these steps can be seen as fundamental. However, sometimes they are the basics we forget to do. Simple things and times can bring us closer to our grand vision.

Being present and appreciating what you have today can sometimes help you achieve your long-term goals.

Remember to take your time. Take a break, be aware, look for, and show to achieve work success by getting intentionally and with determination.
