13 Ways to Improve Self-Directed Reading and Quick Reading

Advertisements

Reading on your own is not an easy task. It takes trying new ways of studying, knowing how to read, and the motivation to keep doing it.

While all of this sounds simple on paper, it is important to be aware of the general public’s feelings about reading. For many people, it has been a matter of years since they first accepted a textbook, let alone a textbook. I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people stop studying in depth after university or college.

It is good now that you are focused on your re-reading. Because once you look into what learning is, you will see that schooling was not the best.

Take self-directed reading for example, there are so many ways to improve it and it is one of the most effective ways to learn around.

What Is Self-Directed Reading?
Self-guided self-study is taking self-study and growing into it. It is a very different approach to what is taught in most schools. In other words, it is a very effective method that anyone can use and it can be good for the school environment.

In fact, there is only one school in the US that can prove that, the Brisbane Independent School or BIS. Because the school was not restricted by the Federal Curriculum – which is a major shortcoming – they could use this method of learning.

This need for independent learning came from Jennifer Haynes, who began teaching at BIS in the 1990’s. From there, the buzzword then switched to a curriculum that focused on seven aspects:

Play
Independence
Internal Testing
The Openness of the Experience
Internal Motive
Acceptance
Flexibility
From those seven points, Haynes noted:

“These elements are integrated into our curriculum and each learner is tracked for further development. It’s amazing to see how a student can go when they need a teacher to help them come up with a project idea and see it in their final years improving planning and projecting … They learn how fun it is to improve their studies my mind and most importantly how to complete this task . ”

Guided Student Features
Students at BIS provide bird watching with some of the features of the student guide. Further testing, we will find out more. Especially when we look at the methods I mentioned above as ways to improve this learning style.

From those methods, many research papers that have emerged over the years show all sorts of side effects in this approach.

First, self-guided reading allows us to take action in our own reading. According to one study, when this happens, people discover and increase their strength, endurance, and improve their inner motivation and integrity.
Second, students feel more empowered by self-study. With online programs, we can see this as a learning approach that you are guided by. After all, you need to work hard when it comes to online courses.

Third, self-help courses develop other practical skills. They will have an easy time setting goals and finding their motives. After all, these kinds of skills can work in areas other than learning.

For example, we all need to set goals if we want to grow and grow our business, our work and our lives. Learning to set worthwhile goals means more than just setting goals that we do not care about.

Some features of these students are:

Highlights – It takes a lot to know your interests and how to promote them. As a result, most of these students spend time in their heads exploring and demonstrating.

Self-efficacy – From effective learning to active motivation, these people work better with their learning. These behaviors can translate into other areas of their lives as they learn ways and means to better manage their lives, work, and more.

Support – Being this type of student means you need to appreciate co-operation and working together. This teaches you to seek help and guidance and to provide help where needed. They work better in a strong team now because of this.

High sense of commitment – Obviously it is important that we take care of ourselves but often, that connects us to the material side. This type of learning focuses on the same important psychological aspect. All in all, it helps us to realize that we need to be more discriminating with the help we render toward other people.

Curiosity – This teaching method encourages us to ask the question “why?” and that you don’t sit with “I don’t know” as a response. As a result, we learn to ask the most important and influential questions that create conversation, discovery and learning.
The amazing thing about self-guided learning is that we can apply it in our lives. So how can you become a self-disciplined student?

How to Improve Self-Directing Reading
Of course, developing this strategy is not that difficult. For most people, it needs to be taught explicitly, but the following techniques will help to grow and learn this strategy.

  1. Identify Learning Goals
You will never gain anything unless you imagine it. Find out what you want to read first.
  2. Ask for Importance
Practice not taking everything for granted. Always be curious like the cat and ask questions that make you care about the answer.
  3. Identify the Challenges
The challenges are not fun. They can be fun and rewarding. Depending on the nature of the problem, you may be struggling to solve it.
  4. Monitor Your Study Procedure
Reading is best if you set your reading levels. No matter the grades, measure your progress against the goals of personal study.
  5. Understand Your Reading Method
There are many resources to help identify learning styles. But do you really know what your style is?

Take a moment to look at the format and in the middle of your reading process and change it from time to time.

  1. Find a Title Background
Know the topic you are reading by looking at the background of the article. Read a variety of articles, or check out the Wikipedia page for a title.
  2. Develop an Inner Motive
    Internal Motive

motivation is driven by internal rewards. It seems like a simple idea but most people struggle with it. Fortunately, it can be read. One way is to plan and share with others what you have learned.

  1. Act on What You Learn
Song, journal, picture… These are examples of things you can build on what you have learned. This not only helps to reinforce what you are learning but also gives you something to look forward to.
  2. Use time
Sometimes we are busy and do not have time to study. But that lack of time is one of the reasons we have to spend our time.

Take your 30 minute break to eat and squeeze in a study session. Do you go to the gym? Why not listen to a podcast or listen to an audiobook during the session?

  1. Create a List of Topics
Think of it as a list of things to do that you want to learn about. These can be broad or minor topics. These lists can help you set goals and work to achieve them.
  2. Appreciate Your Progress Than Your Performance
We never really stopped reading. There will always be small details or views that we are exposed to every day. But if you want to study diligently, focus on reviving learning about your own performance.

Have Realistic Goals for Reading
Self-directed reading is built on the system we are building. To make sure the system sounds good, you want to make sure everything is set within your limits. The last thing you want is to feel discouraged about reading.

  1. Build a network of learning partners
Have a group of people you can work with and connect with. This group of people will pressure you to learn more and can give you a place to talk about what you have learned. Best of all is that this group can be online or offline.

Final Thoughts
Self-study is the key to a rich learning experience. While everyone’s taste for learning has diminished, it is due to an old and inefficient system – a system that does not encourage in-depth learning and does not support students to learn more or set higher learning goals that they care about. Such a program focuses on grades and student performance that are not a point of learning.

Self-study is very important because it teaches people to be independent and responsible. They develop inner motivation skills, independence, ask useful and influential questions, and more.

Now is the best time to get into self-directed reading and fall in love with reading again. After all, there is so much detail in our hands that you have to check it out.
