The best things to say to a depressed person

It is very appealing, when you find that someone is depressed, to try to fix the problem immediately. However, until the depressed person gives you permission to be their therapist (such as a friend or professional), the following answers may be helpful.

Things that didn’t
It makes me feel bad about the words
1) acknowledge my depression (No ‘just a category’)
2) Give me permission to feel depressed (No ‘but why should you be sad?’)

Here is a list from donors to a.s.:

  1. “I love you!”
  2. “I’m tired”
  3. “You are not alone in this.”
  4. “I will never leave you nor forsake you”
  5. “Do you want to be vaccinated?”
  6. “I love you (if you mean).”
  7. “It will pass, we can both take it out.”
  8. “When all this is over, I will stay here (if you understand) and you will do the same.”
